Nevada holds a unique geographic and geologic
space which reflects climate, hydrologic, and landform diversity
in the rain-shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains which
essentially bound the western side of the state and blocks
storms resulting in Nevada being the driest state in The
Country. Eastward, a series of block-fault mountain ranges
create a pattern of valleys, mountains which continues into
central Utah. This pattern gives rise to the term Basin
and Range region. Many of the mountain ranges rise above
10,000 feet in elevation commonly with 20 to 50 miles between
ranges. The isolation of the mountain peaks suggests the
concept of Sky Islands where alpine life zones afford habitat
for unique plants such as Bristlecone Pines. These trees
live in circumstance of frugal resources and grow extremely
slowly and in a life that achieves great age. This species
of pine includes individuals now dated as the worlds oldest
living things. The beautiful habitats where the
Bristlecone Pines grow and the picturesque quality of the Tree's
habit make for some most interesting and remote photographic
opportunities. Those interested in mountains or trees will
find exploring the realm of the Bristlecone Pine utterly
engaging and rewarding.
