West Fork

Running South between Flagstaff and Sedona,
Arizona, Oak Creek Canyon has served as a main travel route for
centuries. This picturesque canyon with its namesake Oak Creek
flowing year-round between lush tree lined banks attracts visitors from
around the world. Of the many tributaries to Oak Creek Canyon West
Fork represents perhaps the most traveled with a perennial stream and
tall cliffs and arched passages for the many calm pools nestled against
the sandstone walls. Meandering for more than 15 miles into the
Red Rock - Secret Mountain Wilderness, West Fork attracts hikers in
every season. This is a most splendid place for making photographs
is the most wonderful indirect light. Early morning and late
afternoon offer soft light and perfect reflections in the many still
pools the normally slow-flowing steam offers.
Access to West Fork is in the middle of
Oak Creek Canyon where the trailhead begins from a large parking area.
Shortly after the trail crosses Oak Creek, the way meanders through a
bygone community of old buildings before bending into the west-trending
fork for a day in a picturesque wilderness.
