The Rocky Mountain Pika
Most of us know many wild animals, insects, and reptiles. Some more obscure
and seldom seen critters tickle our fancy. Some are cute, others are threatening
or scary, and others are grand and majestic. One small, seldom seen high
mountain dweller actually remains active throughout the year and survives
through the long winter by feeding on 'hay stacks' dried and stored from
harvesting grasses and forbes throughout the summer. These small relatives of
rabbits are called Pika and make their homes in the boulders and scree of talus
fields of the high mountains near timberline.Pika may be seen in many high areas of the Rocky Mountains. Rock Mountain
National Park and Mount Evans near Denver, Colorado or in Grand Teton or
