Life as We Know It, Capturing Action
Photographing live theater can be a challenge. The photographer has to anticipate the action to get that perfect shot. Technological advancements are a plenty, however, they cannot replace the artistry of the photographer. Here are some hints that I have found useful. No Flash! In most current productions, lighting designs are so bright; you will not need the flash. If there happens to be intimate or darker lighting, take it in stride and allow your creative instinct flourish; perhaps trying an alternate location or angle.I found some more information here. Some of my favorite shots have come from backstage. Next, don-t be a pest. If your camera makes some sounds other than the shutter, go through the menu and turn off the beeps! Moving on, if you cannot stop-by earlier to learn about some specific ‘shot- moments in the production, know that in musicals there is usually a button. A specific ‘hit- at the end of number where there is usually a pause for applause. This is a great place to snap away. Finally, don-t forget the chorus! Yes, the people that create some of the most memorable moments are the supporting cast of characters. Ensemble members are heartbeat of the show and create the atmosphere.
